Developing in the Cloud

So I don’t have much time for hobby projects… And when I do have time, it is from various computers, with various setup.

That’s why I’m testing the following combination of online services, and so far it looks promising for my needs…

Want to Try the Pomodoro Technique with Online Tools?

The Pomodoro Technique is a timeboxing method where you can use a timer to help you focus on only one thing for a short period of time, typically 25 minutes.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Il_pomodoro.jpgYou can also do this onscreen and online.  A simple, interesting experiment is the Tomato Timer.

For me, pomodoro works better if I keep my goal visible, too.  You could do this by using the following web-based tools:

Simple recipe:

  1. Open NowDoThis in a tab in Chrome
  2. Open Online Stopwatch or Tomato Timer in a new tab
  3. click the Frame two pages extension button
  4. set the next to-do item to focus on
  5. set the timer
  6. go!

mutt flagging and filtering

(mutt is an email client…)

this tip on filtering/ limiting was exactly what i needed right now. it’s
been a while since i went over from mutt to gmail, but i still handle some email with mutt.

When I come across a message that I’d like to read more closely, or that needs a reply, I flag that message as “Important” by pressing the “F” key. Then
at a later time I can ask Mutt to show me only the flagged messages with a command like “l ~F“.

feeds

here’s a few ways to use feeds:

how I use it: opera for (a lot of) news, gmail for fun stuff, feedreader for stuff I want to follow closely.

palm treo 650 hotsync crash tip on log

the following tip was really useful in pinpointing the application that crashed during hotsync.the code given worked for me, even with a Norwegian
carrier.
Palm Addict – Palm OS Treo 650
crashing

check the crash log to see why the Treo is resetting. There is a specific code for each carrier. Check your manual or simply do a search for: Treo “crash
log”
My code is #*377 (at least I think it is. I haven’t had to use it in a while). So, from the phone screen dial #*377 and hit the call button. The Treo will
then tell you what app caused the last crash.(Peter Wolchak)

For some the code is a little bit different, e.g.,
#*#377#.

maplex – time tracking

looks interesting – think i’m gonna try it out
Veex Software Technologies – MapleXp – Working time logger

MapleXp application gives you the ability to track multiple projects and categorize how much time went into each of the tasks involved. Each project can
be divided into a hierarchical structure of tasks, which allows for very precise tracking of working time. ….MapleXp is a freeware
application.
